About the Einstein Telescope

<p>The Einstein Telescope will be a highly sensitive underground observatory for gravitational waves, ripples in space-time caused by the collisions of black holes and other major cosmic events. The triangular measurement system will be located 250 to 300 metres underground and will be ten times more sensitive than its predecessors. The telescope consists of a triangular layout in which the three vertices are connected by beam tubes of ten kilometres each. The border region of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany is considered a strong candidate location due to its vibration-damping geology and robust knowledge infrastructure. Alongside the Euregio Meuse-Rhine region, the Italian island Sardinia and the German state of Saxony are also competing to host the facility. Europe will decide on the final location in 2027.</p>
