<p><strong>With the launch of the European COMET project, the Netherlands and Germany are joining forces to accelerate the development of the Einstein Telescope (ET). This underground observatory will become one of Europe’s most advanced research facilities for gravitational waves, enabling scientists to answer fundamental questions about the universe. COMET offers SMEs and knowledge institutions in both countries the opportunity to collaborate on innovation projects in vibration-free cooling, optics and data processing. COMET provides companies with financial support, helps them find suitable partners and opens doors to international markets.</strong></p><h2>Innovation without borders</h2><p>COMET—short for Comaking the Einstein Telescope—is a collaboration between six organisations from the Netherlands and Germany. Led by Oost NL, partners NMWP, LIOF, Emsland GmbH, TCNN and the TransferAgentur of FH Münster are working together to stimulate technological innovation in the border region. Over the coming years, the partners will organise workshops, matchmaking events and technological roadmaps to connect companies and knowledge institutions to promising innovation opportunities.</p><p>This approach will lead to international consortia that jointly address technological challenges essential for the Einstein Telescope. As a result, the Dutch–German border region is developing into a breeding ground for technological innovation with European impact.</p><h2>Technological innovation for fundamental research</h2><p>The COMET project runs from November 2025 to December 2028 and focuses on the development of technologies that are essential for the Einstein Telescope, a European research infrastructure that will measure gravitational waves and enable new scientific insights.</p><p>“With COMET, we create an ideal addition to our current support services for SMEs,” explains Dr.-Ing. Harald Cremer, Managing Director of NMWP Management GmbH. “The project allows us to guide SMEs even more effectively in their innovation and transformation processes—from the initial idea and technological development to accessing new markets. Through close cooperation with our Dutch partners, a strong network emerges that promotes practical solutions and strengthens the competitiveness of our companies across borders.”</p><p>The Einstein Telescope will be one of Europe’s most advanced research facilities. In 2027, a decision will be made on its location: in the border region of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany; in the German federal state of Saxony; or on the Italian island of Sardinia. The coming years are therefore crucial for the development of the required technologies and the formation of strong collaborative partnerships.</p>

<h2>About the Einstein Telescope</h2><p>The Einstein Telescope will be a highly sensitive underground observatory for gravitational waves, ripples in space-time caused by the collisions of black holes and other major cosmic events. The triangular measurement system will be located 250 to 300 metres underground and will be ten times more sensitive than its predecessors. The telescope consists of a triangular layout in which the three vertices are connected by beam tubes of ten kilometres each. The border region of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany is considered a strong candidate location due to its vibration-damping geology and robust knowledge infrastructure. Alongside the Euregio Meuse-Rhine region, the Italian island Sardinia and the German state of Saxony are also competing to host the facility. Europe will decide on the final location in 2027.</p>

<h2>From space research to practical applications</h2><p>As with previous European research projects such as CERN and ESA, the Einstein Telescope requires entirely new technological solutions, from vibration-free cooling to advanced data processing and a vacuum network spanning more than one hundred kilometres. COMET helps SMEs collaborate with knowledge institutions on these challenges. In doing so, they not only develop solutions for the Einstein Telescope but also create new products and applications for other sectors such as high-tech, energy and healthcare.</p><p>“The Einstein Telescope offers opportunities that reach far beyond science,” says Liane van der Veen, Director of Business Development at Oost NL. “What we develop here can also lead to innovations that impact daily life, such as new sensor technologies or precision instruments that can later be used in healthcare or industry.”</p><p>Even if the Einstein Telescope is ultimately not built in the Dutch–German border region, the innovations emerging from COMET will retain their value. They strengthen the region’s innovation capacity and help position entrepreneurs strongly for future European high-tech projects.</p><h2>About COMET</h2><p>COMET (Comaking the Einstein Telescope) is an Interreg VIa project running from November 2025 to December 2028.
